Jean Brown was a dedicated Emergency Assistance Advocate at Brighton Center from 1985 until her death in 1995. She was admired for her commitment to the community, her non-judgmental way of reaching out to others, and her positive, uplifting attitude towards life. This scholarship is devoted to honoring young African-Americans who most embody these characteristics and who are interested in pursuing a career in a helping profession. Funds for this scholarship will be generated through community fundraises and private donations. Annual awards for first time recipients and for previous recipients who are continuing their education will be based upon availability. First and second year awards will be up to $1,000 and third and fourth year awards will be up to $500. The following criteria will be used for all applicants: The scholarship recipients will be chosen by a committee made up of Newport High School and Brighton Center staff. Brighton Center will oversee the distribution of monies according to the following rules: 1. The scholarship award will be divided in half between first and
second semesters of the school year. Applications are due March 31st, with recipients notified by May 21st. |
